OAKLAND — Garrett County Public Schools announced the upcoming changes to Southern Garrett High School (SGHS), which will include reverting back to a grade 7 through 12 model.
In preparation for this change, the school is undergoing some renovations to better serve the six grade levels housed in the building.
Some of the changes include updates to the locker rooms, the installation of new bleachers in the main gymnasium, and updates to the cafeteria to accommodate more students during lunch shifts. Additionally, the nurse’s office, SRO office, science lab spaces, and Allied Health program will all be updated.
In addition to the physical changes, the school will implement a new schedule for daily operations. It will shift to a semesterized, five-period schedule with an additional remedial period (RAMS Period) at the end of the day. This change will allow students to earn additional high school credits and provide more flexibility in scheduling.
GCPS recognizes that the variance in student ages could be cause for concern and is taking steps to keep populations separate and safe. These steps include, but are not limited to, separating students into different areas before they are released to classes each morning, scheduling lunch shifts so that younger students are with their peers, and having proper supervision during school events.
“We are committed to making this a positive situation for all our students and families,” said Mr. Ryan Wolf, Principal of SGHS. “We are confident that these changes will better serve our students and provide them with the opportunities they need to succeed.”
