Southern boys tie Fort Hill, girls fall 3-2
The Southern Rams’ tennis squad suffered a 3-2 defeat in the girls’ match and finished with a tie in the boys’ fixture due to a lack of light in the final doubles match.
In the girls’ match, Fort Hill swept singles as Jovie Briefeller swept Allie Newman with a pair of 6-0 scores and Abury Spangler topped Bella Ross, 6-0, 3-6, (10-2).
Doubles action saw Sentinel duo Gretchen Porter and Sofia Ottaviana win 1-6, 6-3 (10-5) over Hailey Harvey and Amelia Bolden.
Southern’s wins came in the other two doubles matches as Cadence Natividad and Rylee Iden topped Adaline Carder and Micaela Mattocks, 1-6, 6-3 (10-6); and Ava Hunt and Ella Hershfeldt enjoyed 6-3 and 6-0 wins over Ru Earl and Ellie Armstrong.
Over in the boys’ action, Michael Nazelrod defeated Gunner Wilson, 7-5, 6-3, and Fort Hill’s Sam Spencer won the other singles match with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep over Noah Ferguson.
Ben Nazelrod and Shane Sisler picked up a doubles victory for the Rams as they knocked off Liam Dawson and Tytas Sheetz, 4-7, 6-0 (10-2). Fort Hill’s doubles win came from Josh Eft and Preston Crawford with 6-2 and 6-1 scores against Carter Gray and Kolten Michael.
In the final doubles match, Fort Hill’s Josh Steward and Jaden Wells took the first set over Gus Alvarez and Andrew SanJulian, 6-4. The two teams then were tied 5-5 before they went to a quick tiebreaker round before the lack of light called the match. Alvarez and SanJulian won the tiebreaker 11-9, which put the two teams tied in sets at one apiece. That’s where the match would end.
Southern hosts the Allegany Campers at 4 p.m. on Monday.
